Cameroon's climate varies dramatically from the semi-arid Sahel in the north to the world's wettest inhabited zone on the coast. This guide explains each climate zone and helps you choose the perfect time to visit.
One of Cameroon's most remarkable qualities is its climatic diversity — the country straddles several distinct climate zones, from the semi-arid Sahel in the far north to the humid equatorial belt in the south. Understanding these zones is essential for planning a successful trip, and choosing the right time to visit can make the difference between an extraordinary experience and a waterlogged one.
Equatorial South: Double Rainy Season
Southern regions including Yaoundé, the Dja Reserve, and the forest zone experience a classic equatorial climate with four seasons: a long dry season (mid-November to mid-March), a long rainy season (mid-March to mid-June), a short dry season (mid-June to mid-August), and a short rainy season (mid-August to mid-November). Temperatures remain constant at 23–28°C year-round with high humidity.
Coastal Zone: Among the Wettest Places on Earth
The coast including Douala, Kribi, and Limbe is one of the wettest inhabited areas on the planet. Debundscha, near Mount Cameroon, receives over 10,000mm of rainfall annually — one of the highest figures recorded anywhere on Earth. The dry season runs November to February. Despite the rain, temperatures are warm and pleasant year-round.
Western Highlands: Africa's Temperate Zone
The Bamenda Highlands enjoy a more temperate climate thanks to their elevation: cooler temperatures (16–25°C) and lush green landscapes year-round. The dry season (November to March) sees cool nights. This region is particularly beautiful during the rainy season when hillsides become intensely green.
Northern Savanna: Single Rainy Season
The Adamawa Plateau and northern savanna experience a single rainy season (May to October) with a long dry season where temperatures can exceed 40°C near Lake Chad. Best visited November to February when temperatures are manageable and roads dry. This is also peak wildlife viewing season in Waza National Park.
The Verdict: Best Overall Time to Visit
November to February is the most comfortable time to visit most of Cameroon — excellent wildlife viewing in the north, dry conditions for trekking, and pleasant weather across most regions. For birding and lush green landscapes, June to September in the south and highlands. Global Bush Travel can advise on optimal timing for your specific interests and itinerary.
